The CAN gateway upgrade is only applicable for models before 2007. This will allow the very latest RNS-510 firmware to be used without causing the battery to drain. This upgrade will also allow you to install the RCD-510 without the battery drain. If this upgrade is not installed then only the 2008 firmware can be used with the RNS-510. The latest 2009 firmware will allow additional features such as the speech dialogue system, reverse camera, and road speed warnings. This upgrade is recommended if you intend to get the best use from your RNS-510 Sat Nav.

This upgrade is not required on models after 2008.
